Winner of the UPS Fashion Contest 2008-2009 Announced

Evelyne Kleinen wins the public and jury’s vote

BRUSSELS, 31 March 2009 – Evelyne Kleinen was chosen as the winner of the UPS Fashion Contest 2008-2009 in Belgium. More than 50 young designers from fashion colleges in Brussels, Ghent and Liège took on the challenge of creating a UPS uniform based on the theme “UPS and technology”.

The result of the online vote (in which more than 1,000 members of public participated) and the decision of the jury of fashion experts determined Evelyne Kleinen’s interpretation of the UPS uniform to be the winning design. The Belgian fashion house Bruno Antognini also designed a uniform for women to show its support for young designers.

A UPS driver’s ultimate mission is to deliver parcels in a safe and timely manner. UPS stands for safe, speedy and seamless delivery of goods from across the world, supported by technology and a fleet of vehicles and planes, which inspired Evelyne to incorporate the theme of aeronautical engineering into her UPS uniform design. She used the superfibre, kevlar, which is used to make bullet-proof vests, in her creation and added headphones. Other than that, her style is heavily influenced by early 20th century pilots.

Evelyne Kleinen, who is currently studying for a Bachelor’s degree in textile and fashion techniques at the Haute Ecole Libre Mosane in Liège, was pleasantly surprised with the prize she received for her work: « I didn’t expect to win the prize. I feel honoured to have been chosen out of all these entries! I knew from the start that I definitely wanted to incorporate the idea of aeronautical engineering into my design. After all, speed and safety are key aspects for a UPS driver. Early 20th century pilots’ outfits inspired the style of this uniform ».

UPS awarded a cheque of €1,500 to the winner of this year’s fashion contest. Moreover, the winning uniform will be on display for three weeks in Bruno Antognini’s shops in Sint Niklaas and Antwerp. Huge stickers depicting the winning design will be displayed in the windows of a number of Bruno Antognini’s shops.
